What happened on September 11

2001: The September 11 Attacks

Four coordinated attacks by al-Qaeda killed 2,977 people, destroyed the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, damaged the Pentagon, and ended when passengers fought back aboard United Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania. The attacks reshaped global politics, air travel, surveillance and security policy, and led to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The book places the day within a longer history rather than treating it as the date's only meaning.

1973: The Military Coup in Chile

General Augusto Pinochet led a military coup against democratically elected President Salvador Allende. La Moneda, the presidential palace, was bombed and surrounded, and Allende died there, officially by suicide. Nearly seventeen years of dictatorship followed, with thousands killed or disappeared and tens of thousands tortured.
